Children books council awards

The library has a copy of the book that won the Australian Children's book of the year award for older Readers

Tales of Outer suburbia by Shaun Tan is a superb collection of illustrated short stories for teenagers.

I read it a few months ago. These are some reflections on it from my reading blog

Tan’s tales have a dream like quality. The stories are dotted with drawings, paintings newspaper clippings and scribbles. Every tale and picture focuses on someone feeling alien or left out or left behind. The stories are fairy light but weigh you down. You feel sad but happy. They are full of love, yearning and disappointment at how suburbia has someone how failed anyone a bit different which is really everyone. My favorite is “Alert but not alarmed" and describes how suburbia adapts to housing ballistic missiles as a favor to government. He describes and illustrates beautifully the better uses they are eventually put to , because everyone knows that
to use them would be beyond human reason.

Canberra Library Visit

I spent the first two days of the TAFE holidays visiting some libraries in Canberra, checking up how other libraries are using emerging technologies and catching up with other
Riverina Institute Librarians. Libraries generally are using blogs and wikis and federated searching to assist their customers with accessing information. Igoogle seemed to be a great tool
for keeping track of information that is of interest to you. The Australian national library has just started a cool new research interface that is going to be much easier for patrons looking for Australian information. They are also in the process of digitising Australian Newspapers from 1803 to 1954. You can also contribute to the project by correcting some of the scanning if You are that way inclined.
The ABS library mainly serves the 2700 employees of the ABS. Most of their information and training is delivered on line. They had some great ideas about RSS feeds and customising databases to suit individual needs. The other two Libraries we visitied were Canberra Insititue of technology and University of Canberra. They both either had or were about to get 24 hour learning centres where students could come to the library to use computers any time of day or night. I can't see Deni having that for a while yet (although sometimes its seems like the some students sleep here ...)

What's new in the library June 09

Conferences

Your favourite librarian attended an EDNA conference in Melbourne recently about emerging technolgies in education. The theme was

Building Digital Bridges - The Keynote speaker , Harriet Wakelam, described some technologies that will certainly blow our educational minds when they are finally available. Firewalls will definitely be a thing of the past. Teaching people to be critical users is the key to technology in education. The speaker on Wikimedia provided some great suggestions for critical exercises to be used with Wikipedi. Lilli Wilkinson also provided some scary comparisons between various online encyclopedias and the biases that are in them. The conference outline can be viewed at http://www.edna.edu.au/edna/go/events/workshops/VIC. The conference notes will be available shortly.

There are many new items coming into the library all the time.

Earth Hour - March 2009

Earth Hour takes place on Saturday March 28 at 8:30. This is a good chance to turn off your lights, save some power and try some activities that don't need electricity. I don't think watching telly in the dark counts. Doing something by candle light or moon light sounds much more energy friendly ( and romantic).

You can check out what earth hour is all about on the website
